2025 Benchmarking Survey for Law Firm IT Leaders
What the numbers reveal
This year’s Financial Benchmarking Survey*, written and produced by the legal team at Hazlewoods LLP and sponsored by Lloyds, paints a mixed picture for law firms.
While 71% of firms saw fee income growth, the median increase (6.1%) fell short of last year’s rate. More concerning is the rising cost of doing business: fee-earner costs rose 6.1%, and salaries now account for 63.5% of fee income.
The numbers also reflected that productivity remains an issue. Average chargeable hours rose slightly (from 765 to 773) but still fall far short of the 1,100-hour target.
What might this mean for your firm?
These trends are prompting many law firm leaders – especially those in IT and operations – to reassess how technology supports performance. Here are some of the challenges you might be facing:
- Where does document delivery slow things down? Are your teams still relying on manual drafting or cumbersome templates and editing tools? Are there points in the document lifecycle that create unnecessary friction? We help IT leaders implement tools that automate, accelerate and improve legal document delivery – without disrupting existing workflows.
- Is your current tech stack enabling real productivity gains? Small inefficiencies in daily document tasks add up to big losses. Kutana+Brochet supports IT teams in deploying, configuring, and embedding document automation tools that reduce admin tasks, increase accuracy, and free up fee earner time.
- How are your systems protecting legal teams’ time? Lawyers should be able to focus on client delivery, rather than formatting, duplicating, or managing document versions. Our productivity tools streamline the document journey, from creation to completion, with minimal user friction.
Productivity starts with delivery
This year’s benchmarking data reinforces what many IT leaders already know: real productivity gains don’t come from doing more, but from doing it better. Legal delivery – especially document production – remains one of the biggest levers for improvement.

Bird & Bird
Our tools helped Bird & Bird transform its approach to BD documents. Roughly a year after rollout, they reported a 10% increase in sales — a result they attributed directly to improved document quality and consistency across more than 4,000 staff globally. Please take a look at our Case Study.
Capital Law
Our work with Capital Law saw similar success: by automating routine documents like attendance notes, lawyers were able to reclaim valuable time and redirect it toward higher-value client work. Find out more in this Case Study.
